Design Competitions

Capstone students have done very well in national engineering competitions in the past. In order to encourage students to participate in engineering design contests, Capstone will issue financial rewards as follows:

  • $100 divided between participating team members for a poster, presentation, or paper entry
  • $250 divided between participating team members for a design contest entry

Following are some competition websites that offer opportunities to submit your Capstone work.

BYU Marriott School Competitions

Opportunities, incentives, and resources for students to organize and direct the creation of successful new ventures.

Collegiate Inventors Competition

Entries are judged on the originality and inventiveness of the new idea, process, or technology, as well as their potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically), and on the scope of use.

ASME Competitions

Includes links to the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition, Old Guard Technical Poster Competition, and other competitions.

ASME Arthur L. Williston Medal

The Arthur L. Williston Medal is presented for the best paper submitted in the annual competition on a subject chosen to challenge the abilities of engineering students.

Grow Utah Competitions

The “Concept to Company” competitions are ongoing innovation contests held in various regions across the state of Utah. The main objectives of the contests are to encourage and support Utah's entrepreneurial innovators with the intent of helping them turn their concepts into a company. Each competition focuses on the unique entrepreneurial strengths of that particular region.

ACM Student Research Competition

The ACM Student Research Competition (SRC), sponsored by Microsoft, offers a unique forum for undergraduate and graduate students to present their original research at well-known ACM sponsored and co-sponsored conferences before a panel of judges and attendees.

Note that many of the conferences with submission dates consistent with completing your Capstone project are not yet open for submission. Look at the closed list to see conferences from last year that would be likely candidates, and watch for them to open up later in the year.

IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Student Design Competition

The IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) typically sponsors the CASS Student Design Competition. The CASS Student Design Competition is a worldwide competition where undergraduate students will suggest and execute projects on Electrical Engineering and related areas. The focus should be on finding a solution to a real-life problem based on circuits and systems.

CASS will typically pay for a trip to the annual ISCAS competition. The winning team will be awarded $3,000.

SME Digital Manufacturing Challenge

There is a pressing need to deploy engineering solutions for increasing global resilience against natural disasters and climate change. The 2020 Digital Manufacturing Challenge is a call for action to inspire the next generation of engineers to think about ways to deploy engineering design and manufacturing solutions to strengthen the response, mitigation and/or prevention of such disruptive events and envision an optimistic view of robust, sustainable, smart – even agile communities.

Industrial Designers Society of America International Design Excellence Awards

The International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is one of the longest running and most prestigious design awards programs in existence. Originally founded to recognize exceptional achievement in industrial design, the program has since grown to highlight design in many forms including design strategy, branding, digital interaction and so much more. Each year, thousands of entries are submitted by design teams across the globe, making IDEA one of the largest and most widely anticipated annual awards programs in the world. IDEA set the benchmark for what a design award represents and has endured to become a career-defining catalyst for those talented enough to win.

Microsoft Imagine Cup

For nearly two decades, students from around the world have competed in the Imagine Cup, Microsoft’s global technology competition just for students, for the chance to win mentorship, networking opportunities, free travel, cash, and other prizes, not to mention the coveted trophy. But the Imagine Cup is more than just a tech competition. It’s a chance to work with friends, gain new skills, and meet other students who want to make a difference.

Intel Design Cup

The Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest- Embedded System Design Invitation Contest is jointly hosted by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the Personnel Education Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; organized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Jiaotong University; and co-organized by Intel. The competition aims to encourage improvement of the curriculum structure and content in the disciplines of Information Technology and Electronics, promote implementation of well-rounded education within higher education institutions, and to foster innovation skills amongst students.
